What Southeast applicants need to know
Atlanta is an emerging tech hub with major offices for Google, Microsoft, and dozens of fintech and healthtech companies. Nashville’s growing creative and tech economy is also producing more DNV applicants. None of that changes where the file goes. The honorary consulate in Atlanta helps Spanish citizens with some formalities; visa decisions for the Southeast are made in Miami and Houston.
Tennessee applicants: Nashville and Memphis residents belong to the Houston consulate. Tennessee’s zero state income tax means the Spain comparison is similar to Texas. Required documents
- National visa application form: the consulate’s own form, completed and signed
- Valid passport + 2 passport photos
- FBI criminal background check with apostille: issued within 3 months. FBI + apostille guide →
- Medical certificate: signed by a licensed physician within the last 90 days, stating you have no disease that could pose a public-health risk under the 2005 International Health Regulations; whether it needs an apostille varies, so follow the consulate’s current list
- Spanish private health insurance: full coverage, authorized in Spain, no copays or deductibles
- Remote work proof: employment contract (W‑2) or client contracts and invoices (freelancers)
- Income proof: pay stubs or prior year tax return; solo minimum ~€2,849/month. Some consulates work from a lower figure, but prepare for €2,849: it is the one the UGE applies, and a file built to it meets both figures.
- Spanish translations: official records such as the FBI check need a sworn translation; the consulate’s current list says which other documents it wants translated
- Visa fee: about $190 for U.S. citizens, a reciprocity rate that changes; confirm it before your appointment
Booking and processing
Book through the BLS International appointment system for your consulate’s jurisdiction, Miami for Georgia and South Carolina, Houston for Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Processing after submission usually runs a few weeks, and the consulate decides, not the visa center.
