What Midwest applicants need to know
Chicago’s jurisdiction is vast and thinly spread, and appointment availability has historically been better than at the coastal offices. If you are on a tight timeline, this is a meaningful advantage.
Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin residents who find the Chicago trip long may want to evaluate the in-Spain TIE route: fly to Madrid or Barcelona, enter as a tourist, and file in-country for the 3-year residence permit, often more efficient than two consulate trips (application + pickup).
Required documents
- National visa application form: the consulate’s own form, completed and signed
- Valid passport + 2 photos
- FBI criminal background check with apostille: issued within the last 3 months. FBI + apostille guide →
- Medical certificate: signed by a licensed physician within the last 90 days, stating you have no disease that could pose a public-health risk under the 2005 International Health Regulations; whether it needs an apostille varies, so follow the consulate’s current list
- Spanish private health insurance: full coverage, no copays, authorized insurer
- Remote work documentation: employment contract (W‑2 employees) or client contracts and invoices (freelancers)
- Income proof: recent pay stubs or prior year tax return; minimum ~€2,849/month for a solo applicant. Some consulates work from a lower figure, but prepare for €2,849: it is the one the UGE applies, and a file built to it meets both figures.
- Spanish translations: official records such as the FBI check need a sworn translation; the consulate’s current list says which other documents it wants translated
- Visa fee: about $190 for U.S. citizens, a reciprocity rate that changes; confirm it before your appointment
Booking and processing
Book through the BLS International appointment system linked on the consulate website. Chicago has been running 3–5 week appointment lead times in most periods, shorter than coastal offices. Processing after submission is approximately 4–6 weeks. The office at 180 N. Michigan is organized and applicants report clear communication.
