Where cita previa is required
Not all Spanish government services require a prior appointment, but the ones that matter most for new arrivals do:
- TIE fingerprints: The National Police stations (Oficinas de Extranjería) where you present biometrics to receive your residence card require a cita previa. This is the most critical appointment for new visa holders — the TIE card cannot be issued without it.
- Padrón registration: In large cities — Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville — the ayuntamiento (town hall) requires an appointment for empadronamiento. Smaller towns often accept walk-ins.
- NIE number: If you need a standalone NIE (before the TIE is issued), that too requires an appointment at the National Police.
- Foreign resident certificate: EU citizens applying for a green residency card also use cita previa at the police.
The wait times that matter for Digital Nomad Visa holders
Wait times vary dramatically by city and season. In Madrid and Barcelona, cita previa slots for TIE fingerprints can run 4–8 weeks out during peak periods (typically September–November and January–March). Smaller cities — Málaga, Alicante, Bilbao — tend to be faster. This is not a bureaucratic technicality: a 6-week wait for a fingerprint appointment means a 6-week delay in receiving your TIE card.
The practical implication: book your TIE appointment the moment you receive your resolution letter and your padrón certificate — ideally within days. Do not wait until you feel settled. The appointment wait does not pause your other settlement tasks.
How to book
The main portal for immigration appointments is the Spanish government's Sede Electrónica system. Appointments for TIE fingerprints are booked under "Policía — Toma de Huellas (Expedición de Tarjeta)" in the relevant province. The system releases new slots at irregular intervals — daily or every few days — and they disappear quickly in high-demand cities.
Several private services monitor the system and alert subscribers when slots appear; these are legitimate tools for navigating a genuinely constrained system. The appointment itself is government; only the booking assistance is private.

At the TIE fingerprint appointment: your resolution letter, passport, three passport-size photographs, proof of having paid the TIE fee via Modelo 790 Código 012 (payable at any Spanish bank), and your padrón certificate. Cita previa and the padrón
The padrón registration (at the ayuntamiento) comes before the TIE appointment — the padrón certificate is a required document for the fingerprint appointment. In cities that require prior appointments for padrón registration, you are managing two appointment queues simultaneously. Book the padrón appointment the day you sign your rental contract; the TIE appointment can follow as soon as you have the padrón certificate in hand.
