Why it matters
Modelo 030 is part of the administrative layer that makes you visible to the Spanish tax system as an individual. Your NIE is assigned during the visa process — but registering that NIE with the AEAT for tax purposes, and keeping your address current, happens through Modelo 030.
For most Digital Nomad Visa holders, this comes up in two situations: when you first register with the AEAT after your TIE arrives, and when you move within Spain and need to update your registered address. If you use a gestor, they will typically handle this on your behalf.
When you need Modelo 030
- Registering your NIE with the AEAT for tax purposes (first year)
- Updating your Spanish address in the tax system after a move
- Changing from non-resident to resident tax status
- Registering for electronic notifications from the AEAT (required once your tax obligations begin)
How to file it
- 1 · Online (easiest): Log into the AEAT portal with your Digital Certificate or Cl@ve. File Modelo 030 directly. No appointment needed.
- 2 · In person: Go to any AEAT office with your NIE/TIE and completed form. Appointments are available through the AEAT website.
- 3 · Via gestor: Your gestor can file it on your behalf using their professional credentials.
Common mistakes
- Confusing Modelo 030 with Modelo 036/037. Modelo 030 is for personal census registration. Modelo 036 (or 037) is for registering a professional activity as autónomo. Different forms, different purposes.
- Not updating your address after moving. If you change apartments and do not update Modelo 030, official AEAT correspondence goes to your old address — which can mean missed notifications of tax assessments or audits.
- Assuming it is only for autónomos. W-2 employees who become Spanish tax residents also need to register with the AEAT. Modelo 030 is the mechanism.
Not for the visa application itself — the UGE handles your NIE assignment as part of the visa process. Modelo 030 becomes relevant after your authorization is approved, when you need to register with the AEAT for tax purposes or update your personal data in the tax system.
Modelo 030 is for individuals — it registers or updates your personal tax data with the AEAT (address, tax status, etc.). Modelo 036 (or the simpler Modelo 037) is for registering a professional activity as autónomo. You may need both if you register as self-employed in Spain.
Yes — with a Digital Certificate or Cl@ve identification. Without one, you file in person at an AEAT office. This is one of the reasons getting your Digital Certificate early matters: it lets you handle AEAT filings from home.
When you first register for tax purposes in Spain (getting a NIE for tax use), when you change your Spanish address, when you update your tax status (e.g., becoming a tax resident), or when you want to register for electronic notifications from the AEAT.
