The Digital Nomad Visa requires ongoing compliance: remote work for non-Spanish employers, income above a threshold, periodic renewals.  Residencia permanente ends all of that.  After 5 years, you can work for whom you want, in whatever structure you want, without maintaining any specific qualifying conditions.  The permit renews every 5 years automatically as long as you maintain Spanish residence.

For people who intend to build a long-term life in Spain, residencia permanente is the milestone that transforms “I live in Spain on a work visa” into “I live in Spain, full stop.”

Requirements for residencia permanente

  • 5 continuous years of legal residence: Your time on the Digital Nomad Visa counts from your first TIE date.  The 3-year initial permit plus the 2-year renewal equals exactly 5 years.
  • Clean record: No disqualifying criminal convictions in Spain or your country of origin during the residency period.
  • For the EU long-term version: stable resources and health insurance as well.  The national version doesn’t ask for them.
  • No language or civics exam: the DELE A2 and the CCSE belong to the citizenship application, not to long-term residence.

The path from DNV to citizenship

  • Year 0: Digital Nomad Visa approved. 3-year permit begins.
  • Year 3: Renew for 2 additional years.
  • Year 5: Apply for Residencia Permanente.  Full employment freedom.
  • Year 10: Apply for Spanish citizenship (passport).  EU freedom of movement.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming 5 years automatically means permanent residency. You must actively apply.  It is not issued automatically when the clock hits 5 years.
  • Studying for the wrong exam. People prepare the DELE A2 for long-term residence, which doesn’t need it.  It matters later, for citizenship, together with the CCSE.
  • Extended absences during the 5-year period. “Continuous” residence allows for temporary absences (vacations, business trips) but not long gaps.  More than 6 consecutive months outside Spain in the 5-year period can interrupt the continuity clock.
