Remote project management is real — but your specific role matters

The question the Digital Nomad Visa asks is not whether your job title is remote-compatible. It asks whether your actual work — the specific tasks and responsibilities described in your employment contract and performed day to day — can genuinely be executed from Spain. For most IT project managers and technical program managers at US companies, the answer is clearly yes. Sprint planning, backlog refinement, risk management, stakeholder communication, and delivery reporting are activities that happen through digital tools. Your physical location is irrelevant to the output.

For project managers in capital-intensive industries where the PM role is defined by on-site presence — supervising contractors, conducting safety walkthroughs, managing physical deliveries, attending site meetings — the analysis is different. No employer letter changes the nature of the work. The visa requires that the work be genuinely performable remotely, not merely that the employer is willing to authorize it. Establishing which category your role falls into is the right first step, before examining documents or timelines.

IT and tech PM roles: the clearest cases

Technical program managers, IT project managers, enterprise software delivery leads, and digital transformation managers at US companies are among the strongest profiles for this visa in the PM profession. The work is built entirely on planning tools, communication platforms, issue trackers, video calls, and documentation systems. The location of the project manager does not change the team's ability to ship software, meet compliance deadlines, or execute a migration.

Program managers at large US tech companies — Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, ServiceNow — and their counterparts at enterprise software firms and financial services institutions operate with well-documented employment relationships, income that typically clears the threshold, and no functional requirement for physical presence. If you are in this category, the eligibility question is largely settled. The remaining work is administrative: gathering the right documents, managing the SSA certificate timeline, and building a clean file. The main 2026 guide and the document checklist are the right place to start on that work.

W-2 program managers: the employer letter

W-2 program managers and delivery leads follow the standard employee track. The two anchor documents your employer must produce are a letter explicitly authorizing you to work remotely from Spain, and proof that the company has been in operation for at least one year. You must also have been with that employer for at least three months before filing.

The employer letter is not a generic confirmation of remote work status. It should name Spain specifically, confirm that your individual role can be performed remotely from abroad, and affirm that the employment is ongoing. At large enterprises, this goes through HR and may require management chain approval. At smaller companies, it may require a direct conversation with an executive. The critical point is to have this conversation early — not after the SSA Certificate of Coverage request is already in progress. An employer who agrees in principle but is slow to execute the letter creates timeline pressure that is hard to recover from. The complete W-2 employee framework is covered in the work remotely from Spain guide.

Scrum Masters and agile coaches

Scrum Masters employed full-time at US tech companies on a W-2 basis follow the same employee track as any program manager. The role is remote-capable by design: facilitating sprint ceremonies over video, maintaining the team's Scrum process, removing impediments through digital channels, and keeping the backlog groomed through shared tools is how most Scrum Masters in distributed organizations already work. The employer letter and SSA certificate carry the file in exactly the same way they would for any other W-2 employee.

Agile coaches are more frequently independent consultants — 1099 contractors engaged by multiple clients for transformation programs, training, and process maturity work. If you work as an independent coach billing clients through an LLC or sole proprietorship, you are on the freelancer track. Your client service agreements, invoices, and bank statements build the evidentiary case rather than an employer letter. The work is remote-performable; the document strategy simply differs. The 1099 contractor guide covers the full structure, including the requirement that client relationships be at least three months old before filing.

Construction and on-site PMs: why the analysis is different

This section is for project managers who landed here from a general search and whose work is tied to physical job sites. Construction project management, capital project oversight, facilities management, manufacturing operations management, and on-site production coordination involve daily site visits, contractor meetings, safety inspections, and physical deliveries that require presence. That work cannot be performed remotely — and the Digital Nomad Visa requires that work genuinely be performable from Spain.

An employer can authorize a construction PM to work from Spain, but if the role requires daily site presence to fulfill its core obligations, that authorization does not transform the job into remote work. The visa is not appropriate for roles whose essential functions are location-dependent. A genuine role transition — moving from field operations to a remote-compatible planning or consulting function — followed by sufficient time in the new role before filing, is the realistic path for on-site PMs who want to move to Spain. Applying under the current role without confronting the nature of the work is a grounds for refusal that is difficult to recover from.

Staffing agency employees: which W-2 is the one that counts?

IT staffing is a common employment structure for project managers, particularly those placed on multi-year embedded contracts at enterprise clients. If a staffing agency manages your payroll and benefits — even if you work embedded at a client organization — the agency is your legal employer. Your W-2 names the agency, not the end client.

This distinction matters for the visa in concrete ways. The employer authorization letter must come from your legal employer — the agency — not the client company where you work day to day. The SSA Certificate of Coverage request is filed under the agency's EIN. The agency must have been in operation for at least one year. Some staffing agencies have direct experience with international remote work authorization requests and handle them smoothly. Others are less familiar and need guidance on what the letter requires and why. Identify the employment structure in week one. Staffing agency situations are workable — but discovering the structure two months into preparation adds unnecessary delay to a process that already has a fixed minimum timeline.

Freelance PMO consultants

PMO consultants, fractional program managers, and transformation advisors who work independently — billing through an LLC or sole proprietorship and receiving 1099-NEC forms — qualify under the self-employed track. No employer authorization is needed from anyone. The file is built around commercial contracts with US clients, invoices that correspond to those contracts, and bank deposits that match those invoices. Each client company must have been in business for at least one year, and the working relationship must have been active for at least three months before filing.

Monthly retainer arrangements document better than one-off project statements of work. Retainers establish recurring, predictable income, which is what immigration reviewers look for. If your PMO consulting practice is primarily project-based, a master services agreement with multiple work orders — combined with bank records showing consistent monthly deposits and a client letter attesting to the ongoing relationship — achieves the same result. The income requirements guide explains how to present variable freelance income coherently and what to do when recent months look lighter than your baseline.

Certifications as qualification evidence

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa requires either a university degree or three or more years of professional experience. PMP, CAPM, CSM, CSPO, PMI-ACP, and SAFe certifications are recognized professional credentials — but they are not, on their own, a substitute for the education or experience requirement under Spanish immigration law.

If you hold a university degree in any field — business administration, engineering, information systems, liberal arts — it satisfies the education requirement. Your PM certifications then become supplementary evidence of professional standing that rounds out a strong file. If you do not hold a university degree, three or more years of professional project management experience, documented through employment contracts, payslips, client contracts, and a professional CV, is the statutory alternative. Certifications in this context serve to reinforce the experience claim: a PMP with ten years of IT delivery history has a coherent and credible qualification story that does not require a degree. The without-degree guide covers the documentation strategy in detail.

Income threshold at different PM levels

The 2026 income requirement is €2,849/month gross. Senior technical program managers and experienced delivery leads at US tech companies typically earn well above this level. At five or more years of experience in IT delivery or enterprise software, base salaries in the $90,000–$160,000 range are common, making the income question easy to resolve from payslips and a W-2.

Junior project coordinators and early-career PMs in their first two to three years, whose salaries may be in the $45,000–$65,000 range, are in territory where the threshold is cleared but the margin is smaller. For freelance PMO consultants with variable monthly billings, the income story requires more careful construction: contracts showing ongoing fee arrangements, invoices that reflect those amounts, and bank statements demonstrating consistent monthly deposits above the threshold. Irregular months should be explained in writing rather than left for the reviewer to interpret. Full documentation guidance is in the income requirements guide.

Sprints, standups, and time zones from Spain

Spain operates UTC+1 in winter and UTC+2 in summer. US East Coast teams are six hours behind; Pacific Coast teams are nine hours behind. This is not a visa eligibility question — it is a professional planning question that every PM relocating to Spain needs to think through honestly before moving.

For East Coast-aligned teams, the overlap is workable: a 9 AM ET standup lands at 3 PM in Madrid, and a noon ET sprint planning session runs at 6 PM. For teams operating primarily on Pacific time, a 10 AM PT call arrives at 7 PM in Spain. PMs who manage Pacific-time engineering teams need a realistic plan for their schedule. The project managers who navigate this successfully tend to share a few characteristics: their employers have already normalized async-first communication and documentation-over-meetings culture, their sprint ceremonies are compressed and disciplined rather than open-ended, and they established the new working norms with their teams before relocating rather than after. The visa authorizes you to work from Spain; your team's rhythm determines whether that is sustainable long-term.

Getting started

The clearest first step is confirming that your role is genuinely remote-performable, identifying which employment track applies to your situation, and understanding what the document preparation looks like. For W-2 program managers and Scrum Masters, the SSA Certificate of Coverage starts the clock — it takes approximately three months and cannot be accelerated. Order it before you do anything else. For contractors and freelance PMO consultants, the first task is reviewing whether your contract documentation, invoice history, and banking records tell a coherent and complete income story.

The free assessment checks income threshold, employment structure, role type, and qualification evidence in sequence and delivers a written result within 24 hours. If there is a gap in your file — an employer who may not cooperate, a client relationship that is too new, a certification without the underlying degree or experience documentation — it is substantially better to find it during a 15-minute assessment than three months into preparation. If you prefer to work through the specifics of your situation directly, the contact page is the right next step.
