What goes to the Alaska apostille office

An apostille is issued by the state that produced the document, never by the state you happen to live in.  Three documents in a Digital Nomad Visa file can send you to the Alaska office:

  • Your university degree. You do not apostille the diploma itself.  A Alaska notary certifies a true copy, and the Alaska office apostilles the notary’s signature.  If the notary is commissioned in another state, that state’s office does it instead.
  • Birth and marriage certificates issued in Alaska, when a spouse or children apply with you.  Order a fresh certified copy first; a photocopy or an old hospital certificate cannot be apostilled.
  • A certificate of incorporation or good standing, if you own the company that pays you and it is registered in Alaska.  It is a public record and goes straight to the apostille office, with no notary.

Two documents never go to a state office.  The FBI Identity History Summary and the SSA Certificate of Coverage are federal, and only the U.S. Department of State in Washington can apostille them.  A Alaska apostille on the FBI check is the single most common wasted document I see.  The FBI guide covers that route.

How to order it from Alaska

  1. Get the document in the form the office accepts: a notarised true copy of the degree, or a certified copy of the civil certificate issued within the last few months.
  2. Send it with the office’s request form, the fee and a prepaid return envelope, or walk it in if you are near Juneau.
  3. Ask for the apostille “for use in Spain”.  The certificate is the same for every Hague country, but naming the country avoids a query.
  4. Only then send the document to the sworn translator.  The translation must cover the apostille page, so a translation ordered first has to be redone.

Timing matters more than the fee.  Civil certificates and the FBI check have short freshness windows, so I plan each Alaska order backwards from the filing date rather than ordering everything on day one.  The apostille timing guide explains the sequence.

The Alaska tax comparison

Alaska has no state income tax.  That makes the move to Spain a tax increase on paper: Spain’s Beckham regime charges a flat 24% on work income up to €600,000, where today you pay federal tax alone.

The gap is narrower than the headline.  As a U.S. citizen you keep filing a federal return, and the Spanish tax is credited against it, so the same salary is not taxed twice.  Spanish Social Security, or the Certificate of Coverage that keeps you in the U.S. system, replaces health insurance you currently buy privately.  For most Alaska salaries the all-in burden ends up a few points above today, in exchange for healthcare, a three-year permit and a lower cost of living.

Your consulate: San Francisco

Alaska falls under the Spanish consulate in San Francisco (also serves Northern California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming).  That matters only if you apply from the United States for the one-year visa.  See the San Francisco consulate guide for its appointment system and document formatting.

Most of my clients do not use the consulate at all.  They enter Spain as tourists and I file with the UGE in Madrid for the three-year residence permit, which skips the consular appointment and the year-one renewal.  The two routes are compared in their own guide.

Getting started from Alaska

For a W‑2 employee the slow document is not the apostille, it is the SSA Certificate of Coverage, which your employer requests and which takes several weeks.  I start that first, then time the Alaska apostilles and the FBI check so nothing expires while the certificate is on its way.  A 1099 contractor skips the certificate and registers with Spanish Social Security instead.

I am a licensed Spanish attorney and I handle Digital Nomad Visa files for U.S. applicants only, which is why I know the Alaska office, the federal route and the sworn translators by name.  The free assessment below tells you within 24 hours whether your Alaska profile fits and what to order first.
